I had a Twitter account prior to the 12things course. I do use my account and enjoy reading the tweets of those that I follow. I mostly use my twitter account for following others and rarely have anything to post of my own.
Like FaceBook some posts seem unneccessary and pointless, things like "I'm eating my tea" "I'm going here/there" etc.... Sometimes I think people can be obsessive and I think "I don't need to know that". So I am always mindful of this and only post when I feel something genuinely should be shared.
I also have my reservations regarding privacy on social networks. I sometimes think about posting but then stop myself because I feel the post will reveal too much about me the person or where I am.
Hi HappyRabbit,
ReplyDeleteI share your view about fairly pointless posts, but I have to confess I have posted my fair share of them, too! I think it takes a while, when you first start using social media, to find your "online voice". I certainly do regret some of the things I have posted in the past, but, hey, lessons learned and i'd like to think I am far more circumspect now.
Do you think you would use twitter in a library context?
Yes I think Twitter could be put to good use in a library context. It could be used for announcing new stock, training sessions, current awareness and for promoting electronic resources. It would also be useful for real time announcements such as when times need to change due to unforeseeable circumstances or courses cancelled. Twitter also allows for feedback from library users.
ReplyDeleteAs a lot of people now have smart phones that they can use to access Twitter it avoids the problems of access with IT departments. I think twitter is a great medium for real time, live interactions.
